What happened
FMC Corp. (FMC) stock fell as much as 35% on Thursday, to a more than 20-year low, after it slashed third-quarter guidance on weak demand, bloated channel inventory and price cuts. It now expects third-quarter sales of $65 million to $125 million, versus $840 million to $900 million forecast in July. Its adjusted EBITDA (a measure of operating profit) is now seen as a loss of $510 million to $565 million, not a profit of $120 million to $140 million. About $625 million to $675 million of that hit comes from cutting prices on products already held by distributors.
Why it matters
FMC sells crop protection chemicals, the products farmers spray to protect harvests, so a loss of this size points to real stress in the industry. Cheaper copycat versions (generics) are pushing market prices down, so FMC is cutting prices on products its distributors already bought. FMC also plans to change its U.S. selling model, which relied on high list prices and big rebates.
