What happened
Ericsson (ERIC-B.ST) stock rose 6.8% to SEK 103.70 on Thursday after a Q3 earnings beat, with sales of SEK 59.5B topping forecasts on strong mobile network demand. Ericsson, which makes equipment for mobile networks, reported sales up from SEK 56.2B a year ago, led by Japan, India and the Middle East. Profit before some costs (adjusted EBITA) was SEK 10.1B, above the SEK 7.9B analysts expected but below last year's SEK 15.8B. Shares jumped as much as 11% early in the day before settling lower. Ericsson also spent SEK 4.8B buying back its own shares.
Why it matters
Ericsson is one of the world's biggest makers of mobile network equipment, so its results show how much phone companies are spending on their networks. Management said the market for radio equipment (RAN) is flat. It also said pricier parts, such as memory chips in short supply because of AI demand, will squeeze profit margins in 2027. That means this quarter's good news may be harder to repeat next year.
