What happened

Alcoa (AA) stock rose about 2% in after-hours trading on Thursday after the aluminum maker reported third-quarter earnings of $1.82 a share, beating the $1.54 analysts expected. Sales were $3.7 billion, up 24% from a year ago but below the $3.78 billion analysts expected. Higher prices for alumina, the raw material refined into aluminum, helped offset lower aluminum prices. Alcoa also generated $472 million in cash left over after spending on its operations (free cash flow).

Why it matters

Alcoa made far more profit than a year ago, even though its sales missed forecasts. Adjusted profit was $485 million, compared with a $6 million loss in the same quarter last year. The company also warned that higher raw material costs and planned maintenance will cut about $30 million from its aluminum business next quarter.
