What happened

Rocket Lab (RKLB) stock fell about 10% to $53.17 on Thursday after the company delayed its first Neutron rocket launch to 2027 because of a manufacturing defect in a fuel tank part. Engineers found tiny air pockets in a carbon-fiber dome that caps the rocket's first-stage fuel tank. The launch had been planned for the last three months of 2026. The shares had already dropped 7.85% on Wednesday, before the news came out after the market closed. Two Wall Street firms, KeyBanc and Clear Street, then lowered their price targets.

Why it matters

Rocket Lab is counting on Neutron, a bigger rocket, to win larger launch contracts and grow beyond its smaller Electron rocket. A later start pushes back the sales Neutron could bring, while the costs of building it keep running. This is not the first time the debut has slipped. The rest of the business is still growing, with sales up 62% in the spring quarter.
