What happened
Brent crude (BZ=F) fell 1.7% to $104.30 a barrel on Thursday as hopes of eased tanker sanctions outweighed Hormuz shipping attacks that sank two cargo ships, GFS Pride and Cape Dao. GFS Pride, a container ship, was hit by a projectile on Tuesday, October 13, caught fire and sank, though all 21 crew were rescued. Cape Dao, a bulk carrier, was struck on September 23 and later sank, and one crew member died. Iran says it is stepping up attacks because of a US blockade of its ports.
Why it matters
Brent crude, the world's main oil price benchmark, is still above $100 a barrel, which feeds into what people pay for fuel and shipped goods. The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway that much of the world's oil passes through, so attacks there can lift prices quickly. Thursday's dip shows traders are also weighing a possible US move to ease sanctions on tankers, which could lower shipping costs.
