What happened
GlobalFoundries (GFS) stock rose 5% to about $49 on Wednesday after it said Japan will fund up to $21B for two New York chip plants, with the US taking a 4% stake. GlobalFoundries makes chips used in cars, factories and phones. It will run both plants at its Malta, New York site. The first plant, funded with about $10B, should open in 2029, and a second about $10B plant would follow. The US Commerce Department will own about 4% of the company, and $955M of earlier US chip grants will be redirected to research.
Why it matters
GlobalFoundries is getting outside money to add about 1.8 million chip wafers (the thin discs chips are cut from) of yearly capacity in the US, mostly for chips used in cars and factories. The US government becoming a part-owner is notable, because it ties a chipmaker more closely to Washington and gives taxpayers a share of any gains. Customers such as Apple, GM and Renesas plan to use the new capacity.
