What happened
Fed rate-hike odds rose to close to 40% for the October 27-28 meeting on Wednesday after September inflation hit 3.7% and the Beige Book flagged diesel-driven price pressures. The Beige Book, a Fed survey of businesses across the country, said three of 12 regions saw fast price growth and mentioned diesel 21 times, up from two last time. Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee called the inflation report "discouraging," noting that service prices are rising by more than 5% a year. Prices rose 0.6% in the month, and the Nasdaq fell about 1.8%.
Why it matters
The Federal Reserve is weighing whether to raise interest rates again, which would make mortgages, car loans and credit cards more expensive. Diesel fuels trucks, farms and planes, so higher diesel costs can show up in grocery and shipping prices. The Fed already raised rates by a quarter point last month, to a range of 3.75% to 4%, so another rise would extend that run.
