What happened
Apple (AAPL) stock rose 0.5% to a record $342.96 on Wednesday, lifting its market value to $5.005 trillion after the smart home hub launch and Siri upgrade built on Google's Gemini. It is the second company ever to close above $5 trillion, after Nvidia at about $5.34 trillion. The gain came as the Nasdaq fell 1.88% and Nvidia dropped 3.16%. A day earlier, Apple unveiled HomeView, a $299 smart home screen run by a rebuilt Siri that uses Google's Gemini AI technology.
Why it matters
Apple is now worth more than every company except Nvidia, and its shares held up while most big tech stocks fell. The stock trades near 35 times next year's expected profit (forward P/E), well above its 10-year average near 23 times, so investors are paying a high price for future growth. HomeView and the Gemini-based Siri are Apple's first big push to bring AI into the home.
