10-Year Treasury Yield Rises to 5.3% as Fed Hike Odds Jump
Why is the 10-year Treasury yield up today?
The 10-year Treasury yield (US10Y) rose to about 5.3% on Wednesday, up from about 5.2%, after hotter-than-expected September CPI lifted Fed rate-hike odds to about 50%.

What happened
The 10-year Treasury yield (US10Y) rose to about 5.3% on Wednesday, up from about 5.2%, after hotter-than-expected September CPI lifted Fed rate-hike odds to about 50%. Prices were 3.7% higher than a year ago, above the 3.6% economists expected and up from 3.4% in August. Gasoline jumped 9.1% in one month and is up 34.2% from a year ago. Prices excluding food and energy (core inflation) rose 2.6%, also above forecasts.
Why it matters
The 10-year Treasury yield influences mortgage rates and many other loan costs, so a rise to about 5.3% makes borrowing more expensive. Inflation is speeding up, mostly because gasoline got much more expensive. The Fed raises interest rates to slow price increases, and traders now see roughly even odds of another increase at its Oct. 27–28 meeting.
