What happened
Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) stock fell 6.4% to about $64 on Wednesday after a Barclays downgrade, as the bank sees no meaningful AI inflection yet following a 186% rally this year. Barclays cut HPE, Dell and NetApp to "equal weight" from "overweight", meaning it no longer ranks them as favorites, and lowered its HPE price target to $77 from $83. Dell fell 10.3% the same day. Barclays said higher part costs, such as memory chips, have lifted server sales, but it has not seen real AI-driven demand yet.
Why it matters
Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) and Dell are among the best-known AI-boom stocks, and both are up well over 100% this year. Barclays is saying much of the recent sales growth comes from higher memory prices, not new AI demand. If those prices ease, sales growth could slow. After such big gains, shares can drop fast when the story is questioned.
