What happened
Brent crude (BZ=F) rose 0.8% to $106.56 a barrel on Wednesday as Saudi supply fears outweighed hopes for Russian diesel, while Ukraine says Russia broke an energy truce. President Trump announced an "energy ceasefire" on Sunday, a pause on attacks on power and fuel sites. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy then said Russia hit at least six Ukrainian energy sites. Days earlier, the US had temporarily allowed purchases of Russian diesel, which Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called "very risky".
Why it matters
Brent crude, the main global oil price, stays high because the world's fuel supply is tight. If the energy truce fails, attacks on power and fuel sites can continue and push prices up. Meloni warns that easing sanctions on Russian diesel could give Moscow more money for the war and weaken pressure to negotiate. Diesel prices are already up more than 110% this year, which raises costs for shipping, farming and households.
