What happened
BlackRock (BLK) stock jumped nearly 4% premarket on Wednesday after an earnings beat and record $15.5 trillion in assets, then gave back its gain in regular trading. Profit per share, adjusted to leave out one-time items, was $15.93 against about $14.15 expected, and sales rose 19% from a year ago to $7.75 billion. Clients added a net $205 billion in new money during the quarter. Later in the day the stock slipped as much as 1.5% as a hotter-than-expected inflation report weighed on the market.
Why it matters
BlackRock is the world's largest investment manager, so its results show where people are putting their savings. It now looks after about $15.5 trillion for clients (known as assets under management), up about 15% from a year ago. Record sales and new deposits show investors kept adding money even as stocks fell on inflation worries. The stock fading also shows that strong results can be overshadowed when the wider market drops.
