What happened
Bank of America (BAC) stock fell 2.3% in after-hours trading on Tuesday to $52.73 after US regulators fined it $1.21B for failing to report over $5B in suspicious transactions. Treasury's financial crimes unit (FinCEN) set a $1.2 billion penalty, and the bank's main regulator (the OCC) added a record $750 million fine that counts toward that total. A separate $11.6 million sanctions settlement brings the sum to about $1.21 billion. Treasury said over $1 billion of the unreported activity involved national security risks, such as Chinese money-laundering networks.
Why it matters
Bank of America, the second-largest US bank, was found to have let billions of dollars in suspicious transactions go unreported, even after a December 2024 order to fix its controls. The fine shows regulators will punish big banks that fall behind on checks for financial crime. The bank said the charge will cut third-quarter profit by about 17 cents per share.
