What happened
Albertsons (ACI) stock rose 1.4% to $12.72 on Tuesday after the grocer withdrew its 2026 forecast and launched a business review to cut costs and prices, reversing early losses. It beat profit forecasts, earning an adjusted 36 cents a share versus 33 cents expected, though sales slipped 0.1% to $18.89 billion. Profit fell to $52 million from $169 million a year earlier. No new outlook will come until the review ends in the quarter finishing February 2027.
Why it matters
Albertsons is a large US grocery chain, and it says its costs are too high to keep up with rivals like Walmart on price. Executive Chair Meg Whitman said it must cut costs faster and use much of the savings to lower prices. If it follows through, shoppers could see cheaper groceries, while the company's profits and its competitors' pricing could come under pressure.
