What happened
UnitedHealth (UNH) stock jumped about 4% to $395 early Tuesday after the insurer raised its 2026 profit outlook, then slipped to about $375 as earlier gains faded. UnitedHealth earned $4.69 a share in the third quarter, well above the $4.14 analysts expected, and now expects at least $20.50 for the year, up from $19.50 to $20.00. Medical bills took 88.4% of premiums, down from 89.9% a year ago, and Optum's clinic unit earned $735 million versus $41 million. About $610 million came from releasing money set aside for past claims.
Why it matters
UnitedHealth, which brings in about $113 billion in sales a quarter, is a gauge for whether health insurers have gotten medical costs back under control. Its profit is rising because of tighter spending and new pricing, not growth: revenue slipped 0.4% and it lost 935,000 Medicare Advantage members (private plans for people 65 and older) since the end of 2025. The early gain faded by midday, so investors did not fully reward the news.
