What happened

Britain imposed sanctions on two Iranians on Monday after Prime Minister Andy Burnham said Iran's Revolutionary Guards almost certainly directed a foiled plot against RAF Fairford, a claim Tehran denies. Burnham told Parliament the plot was "highly likely" coordinated in Iran, and Tehran called that "unfounded and malicious speculations". Five men were arrested near the base on 27 September and two more later, but all were released on bail without charge, and police found petrol in three vans but no viable explosives. Britain also summoned Iran's ambassador, and 29 countries condemned Iran's attacks abroad.

Why it matters

Britain's public accusation that Iran's Revolutionary Guards (IRGC, a powerful arm of Iran's military) directed a plot on British soil raises tension between the two countries. The new sanctions freeze assets and ban travel for those named, and follow earlier steps against the Guards in July. Critics say the response is too soft, so pressure on the government to act harder may grow.
