What happened
Treasury yields (US10Y) slipped 0.04 percentage points to 5.22% on Tuesday as the IMF warned of a disorderly bond spike driven by rising debt, resurgent inflation and heavy AI borrowing. A yield is the interest rate investors demand to lend to a government, and it moves opposite to the bond's price. The IMF says public debt is near its highest since World War II, while AI hyperscalers, the giant cloud companies, now make up 10% of top-rated company bond sales, up from under 1% in 2024.
Why it matters
Treasury and other government bond yields set the baseline cost of mortgages and business loans, so a sudden jump could reach ordinary households. The IMF says AI companies selling huge amounts of debt compete with governments for the same investors, adding upward pressure on yields. Hedge funds now hold about 9% of Treasuries, up from about 4% in 2022, which the IMF says could magnify a sell-off (per).
