What happened
Fermi (FRMI) stock rose about 19% to $3.87 on Tuesday after AMD agreed to back its 222 MW Texas AI data center lease, a guarantee that helps Fermi line up project financing. The lease is a 15-year deal worth about $6.5 billion with AI cloud firm TensorWave. AMD's backing means lenders have a stronger company standing behind the rent, which helps Fermi raise construction money. The companies also signed a framework to expand by up to 650 MW (megawatts, a measure of power). The lease must close by 31 October.
Why it matters
Fermi is trying to build a very large power and AI data center site in Texas, and a big lease means little until lenders agree to fund construction. AMD's support is a key step toward that financing, but it is not the financing itself. The shares are still about 59% lower this year, which shows how far the stock had fallen before this news.
