What happened

Albemarle (ALB) stock fell 2.7% to $98.51 on Monday after China's lithium carbonate futures dropped 11.8% to a ten-month low, reviving fears of a global lithium glut. Before the market opened, Albemarle was down 4.2%, and rival SQM was also down 4.2%. The slide in lithium, a metal used in electric-car batteries, followed a deal that could cut Chinese hybrid-car exports to Europe by more than half, which means fewer batteries are needed. Analysts at Goldman Sachs expect the world to move from a lithium shortage to a surplus within two years.

Why it matters

Albemarle is a major lithium producer, so its share price tends to move with the price of the metal. Lithium prices have nearly halved since a May peak, from 209,880 yuan a ton to 104,740 yuan. Lower prices can squeeze miners' profits. They can also make batteries cheaper for carmakers over time.
