Tariff Threat Rises to 300% for Firms Without US Plants
Why did Trump threaten 300% tariffs?
Tariffs of 150% to 300% were threatened on Saturday by President Trump against foreign companies that do not build US factories within about 18 months in a push for US factory investment.

What happened
Tariffs of 150% to 300% were threatened on Saturday by President Trump against foreign companies that do not build US factories within about 18 months in a push for US factory investment. He said Korea, China, Japan and Canada used tariffs (taxes on imports) against the US, adding "in the end they're all building here". South Korea has pledged $350 billion of US investment for a lower 15% tariff, and Trump said that if Seoul backs out, "I'll just charge them more". It came nine days after his summit with Xi Jinping, which extended the US-China trade truce two months.
Why it matters
Trump's tariff threat matters because a 300% tariff is a tax worth three times the goods' value, which would effectively shut most imports out of the US market. Companies in Korea, Japan, China and Canada must weigh the cost of building American factories against that risk. So far it is a rally promise, not a formal rule, so prices have not changed yet.
