What happened
Stellantis (STLA) shares rose about 2% to about €4.09 on Monday after an EU-China understanding that could cut Chinese hybrid-car exports to Europe by more than half. EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic announced the deal Friday after talks in Beijing, saying it would cut imports by several million cars over four years. Plug-in hybrids (cars with a petrol engine and a rechargeable battery) imported into the EU jumped 86% in a year through September. Renault also rose, and Volkswagen and Porsche edged higher.
Why it matters
Stellantis has been squeezed by cheaper Chinese rivals, and its shares are still down about 59% this year. If Chinese hybrid shipments really fall by more than half, European-built cars face less price pressure. Sefcovic called the deal only a first step, so the details are still to come.
