What happened
North Korea fired multiple ballistic missiles toward the East Sea on Monday, one flying over 900 km, in its 16th launch of 2026, days after South Korea's hypersonic glide vehicle test. Japan said at least two missiles were fired 17 minutes apart, one flying about 220 km and the other over 910 km. Japan's deputy defence minister said the second may have been a hypersonic weapon, one that glides at over five times the speed of sound. South Korea's military called it a show of force against its October 8 test.
Why it matters
North Korea's 16th missile launch this year suggests its weapons programme is still moving fast, and that the two Koreas are now trading tests of advanced missiles. Hypersonic missiles are harder to shoot down because they can steer in flight. South Korea's presidential office said the launches violate United Nations Security Council resolutions. Markets did not blame the launch: South Korea's main stock index fell 3.65%, mainly on a chip-stock sell-off.
