What happened
Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) fell 1.25% to 27,193.34 on Thursday after OpenAI said its annualized revenue is near $50 billion, not the $68 billion widely reported, hitting AI stocks. Oracle fell 5.5% and Intel 5.3%, while Nvidia lost 2.9%. The Nasdaq 100, a narrower index of the biggest Nasdaq companies, had its worst one-day drop in seven weeks. Annualized revenue means recent sales scaled up to a full year, and the gap mostly comes from accounting: the higher figure counted partner sales that OpenAI leaves out. The Nasdaq regained 0.6% on Friday.
Why it matters
OpenAI's revenue matters because many tech companies and investors have bet heavily on its growth. Oracle and chip makers sell the computing power and chips behind AI, so doubts about OpenAI quickly hit their shares. The gap looks like a counting difference rather than weaker demand, and OpenAI still reports 77% growth in its sales pace in the third quarter. It shows how sensitive markets are to AI numbers.
