Gold Slips to $4,190 as Rate-Hike Odds Stay High
Why is gold down today?
Gold (XAU) fell 0.2% to about $4,190 an ounce on Monday as rate-hike odds stayed high, since higher interest rates and a stronger inflation outlook make non-paying gold less attractive.

What happened
Gold (XAU) fell 0.2% to about $4,190 an ounce on Monday as rate-hike odds stayed high, since higher interest rates and a stronger inflation outlook make non-paying gold less attractive. That is about 25% below its January record of almost $5,600. Gold normally gains when the world feels unsafe, but the Iran conflict has pushed oil above $100 a barrel, which adds to inflation and keeps pressure on the US central bank (the Fed) to raise interest rates again. Traders now see more than an 80% chance of a hike in December. Higher rates hurt gold because it pays no interest.
Why it matters
Gold's slide matters because it shows that war no longer automatically lifts the metal many people treat as a safe place to hold money. This year the Middle East conflict is pushing oil and inflation up, which raises interest rates and makes gold less attractive. Anyone who bought near January's peak is now sitting on a loss of about a quarter.
