What happened
Constellation Energy (CEG) stock rose 12.2% to $300.40 on Tuesday after Google signed a 20-year deal for 890 MW of upgraded nuclear power, a contract backed by more than $4.3B of reactor upgrades. Google also signed a separate 15-year deal to buy 2,700 MW (megawatts, a measure of power output) from Constellation's existing plants. The upgrades make 11 existing reactors in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey produce more power, with the first due in 2028. The price Google will pay was not disclosed. The stock is still down about 15% for 2026.
Why it matters
Constellation Energy now has a large, long-term customer for extra nuclear power. Tech companies need huge amounts of steady electricity for AI data centers, and Google chose to pay for upgrades at existing reactors, which can add power sooner than building new plants. Other nuclear-power companies, including Vistra and Talen, also rose that day. Because Google's price was not disclosed, the profit from the deal is still unclear.
