What happened
Yandex (YDEX) stock fell 4.5% on Friday on the Moscow Exchange after Ukrainian drone strikes hit a second Yandex data center in two days, disabling several modules. A day earlier, drones started a fire at its Sasovo hub in the Ryazan region, forcing a full shutdown of a site with tens of thousands of servers. Sasovo holds two of Yandex's three supercomputers, which train its YandexGPT AI model using Nvidia A100 chips. Yandex has not said whether they were damaged. Yandex runs five large data centers, and two have now been hit.
Why it matters
Yandex is Russia's leading AI and technology company, and its data centers power everyday services such as cloud storage, railway websites and online shops. The strikes show that computing hubs can be attacked in war, just like power plants or oil refineries. They also put the buildings that train AI models on the list of wartime targets. For investors, they are a reminder that physical damage can hit a tech company's value quickly.
