South Korea Test-Flies First Hypersonic Weapon at Mach 5+ as Tensions Rise
Why did South Korea test a hypersonic weapon?
South Korea test-flew its first homegrown hypersonic weapon on Thursday, designed to fly at least five times the speed of sound, days after North Korea's own hypersonic missile launch and September land-mine blasts.
Key numbers

What happened
South Korea test-flew its first homegrown hypersonic weapon on Thursday, designed to fly at least five times the speed of sound, days after North Korea's own hypersonic missile launch and September land-mine blasts. President Lee Jae Myung watched the weapon separate from its booster, steer itself, and hit its test target. North Korea said it fired a hypersonic missile more than 1,000 km on Oct. 3, while South Korea measured over 700 km. Three South Korean soldiers were hurt by mines on Sept. 21 that Seoul says North Korea planted; Pyongyang denies it.
Why it matters
South Korea now has a home-built weapon meant to slip past missile defenses, which adds to an arms build-up with North Korea. Border tension is a risk investors in the region keep an eye on. Still, market reports blamed oil-driven inflation worries, not the test, for the Oct. 8 fall in the Kospi stock index (2.62% to 6,625.93) and in defense maker Hanwha Aerospace (8.33%).
