What happened
Lululemon (LULU) stock rose 0.9% to about $92 on Thursday, holding near its 52-week low, after the retailer named Athleta CEO Maggie Gauger president and chief product officer in a leadership overhaul. Gauger, who ran Gap's Athleta brand for about a year, starts Oct. 26 in a new role overseeing product design. It also hired Joseph Godsey as chief operating officer. It is the first big outside hire by new CEO Heidi O'Neill. Shares are down about 55% this year, and sales fell 4% last quarter.
Why it matters
Lululemon is losing sales in its biggest market, where the Americas, about two-thirds of revenue, fell 8% last quarter compared with a year ago. The new president role puts one person in charge of what the clothes look like, which Jefferies says gives clearer accountability. Jefferies also says new product leadership may take several seasons to show up in stores. Stifel says the changes do not alter its view of long-term headwinds.
