What happened
A Russian glide bomb killed at least 33 people in Kramatorsk, eastern Ukraine, on Thursday by hitting two passenger buses, and Zelensky said it "will not go without our response". A glide bomb is a bomb fitted with small wings so it can travel a long way to its target. Both buses caught fire, and at least 18 people were wounded, though one outlet reports 22. Zelensky warned the toll could rise because doctors are still fighting to save some of the injured. The day before, a Russian missile hit an apartment building in Pryluky and killed 22 people, including five children.
Why it matters
Kramatorsk is part of a chain of Ukrainian cities, called the fortress belt, that Russia wants to capture as part of its claim to the whole Donbas region. Two mass-casualty attacks in two days, plus Zelensky's promise of a response, raise the chance of further escalation, and officials expect Russian missile and drone strikes to increase as winter nears. Local authorities have stopped public transport in Kramatorsk and nearby Sloviansk, which disrupts daily life for residents.
