What happened
Broadcom (AVGO) stock fell 4.4% to $360.14 on Thursday after reports of early talks on $50B-plus in AI debt financing for OpenAI chips and a lower OpenAI revenue figure. Broadcom is arranging more than $50 billion in private loans, and lenders such as Apollo and Blackstone have been approached. The talks are early, and the size could change. The money would help OpenAI pay for custom AI chips before its own sales arrive. OpenAI also said its yearly sales pace is about $50 billion, below the $68 billion reported in August.
Why it matters
Broadcom is now helping customers borrow huge sums to buy its chips, which shows AI spending is outgrowing what banks and bond markets can easily fund. Across three deals, including two for AI company Anthropic, the total tops $145 billion. If AI companies' sales grow more slowly than hoped, the risk of unpaid debt rises for lenders and possibly Broadcom. Part of the Anthropic debt is guaranteed by Broadcom.
