What happened
Taiwan stocks (TAIEX: ^TWII) rose 0.22% to a record 49,822 on Tuesday as US tech gains lifted chipmaker TSMC, even with Taipei bracing for possible Chinese drills after National Day. It followed a 2.55% jump on Monday to 49,712, after weak US jobs data cut bets on another US rate hike. Taiwan also received its first two of 66 new F-16V fighter jets from the US on Oct. 2, part of an $8 billion order. National Day is Oct. 10, and Chinese drills are possible; in September, China's military sent 181 aircraft into Taiwan's air defense zone.
Why it matters
Taiwan's stock market matters worldwide because TSMC, the world's biggest chipmaker, makes up about 41% of the TAIEX index. Any Chinese military move near Taiwan could disrupt chip supply and shake share prices far beyond the island. The new jets add to air defenses that already scramble almost daily to shadow China's military.
