What happened
Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) stock fell 2.4% to 262,000 won on Thursday after the company forecast record 107.4 trillion won quarterly profit, as investors had hoped for even more. The profit, about $80 billion, is almost nine times last year's and the first above 100 trillion won for any South Korean company. AI data centers are buying huge amounts of memory chips, and shortages have pushed chip prices sharply higher. One major forecast, from Bloomberg, was higher at 108.67 trillion won. Final results are due October 29.
Why it matters
Samsung Electronics is the world's biggest memory chip maker, so its profit shows how much money the AI boom is generating for the companies that supply computer parts. Memory chips are in short supply, with prices about four times higher than a year ago. The share dip shows that even record results can disappoint when investors expect more, and some worry AI spending may not last.
