What happened
Nike (NKE) stock dipped over 1% in Tuesday premarket trading near $34, close to a 13-year low, after Berenberg cut it to Sell, saying market share has irreversibly shifted away. The bank also cut its price target, or estimate of what the shares are worth, to $27.50 from $49, and trimmed profit forecasts by 34% to 46% for the next three years. By midday the shares had edged up about 1.2% to $34.35. Even so, Nike is down nearly half this year and trades 81% below its 2021 peak.
Why it matters
Nike is one of the world's best-known brands, and Berenberg's call matters because it argues the sales slide is lasting, not a bad patch. If that view is right, winning customers back from smaller rivals could take years, not months. Only 26% of analysts now rate the stock a Buy, the lowest share in at least 20 years. This is one bank's opinion, and others see a slower recovery rather than a permanent loss.
