What happened
EU ambassadors agreed on Wednesday to add a record 1,646 names to the Russia sanctions list, mostly ballistic-missile suppliers, a package foreign ministers are due to approve formally on Oct. 12. The list names 743 individuals and 826 companies or groups accused of backing the war, plus 77 Russian lawmakers who ran in September's vote in occupied Ukraine. More than half are tied to making Russia's Iskander-M ballistic missiles, and seven North Korean individuals and entities are also added. Once approved, nearly 4,650 people and groups will be on the EU's list.
Why it matters
The EU's Russia sanctions list is about to grow by more than half in one step, from roughly 3,000 names to nearly 4,650. Anyone listed faces an EU travel ban and frozen assets, and EU people and companies cannot send them money. Aiming at missile suppliers is meant to make it harder for Russia to build the weapons it fires at Ukraine.
