What happened
Constellation Brands (STZ) stock rose 2.4% to $118.39 on Wednesday after Q2 earnings beat estimates and management said full-year profit could reach the high end of its guidance. Shares first fell about 4.5% before the open because beer profit margins are expected to be thinner in the second half of the year, at 34.5% to 35.5% versus 39% this quarter. Profit per share (EPS) was $3.74, above forecasts of about $3.60, and sales rose 6% to $2.63 billion. Pacifico, now a top-10 beer brand by dollar sales, grew about 19%.
Why it matters
Constellation Brands makes Modelo, Corona and Pacifico, so its results show how American beer drinkers are spending. Its two biggest brands, Modelo Especial and Corona Extra, are selling less, but Pacifico and Victoria are growing fast enough to help fill the gap. Management said full-year profit per share could reach the high end of its $11.20–$11.90 range if September's improving sales continue, though HSBC cut its rating to Hold after the report.
