What happened
Bitcoin (BTC) fell about 3% to near $83,000 on Wednesday as U.S. spot ETF outflows, rising Treasury yields and more than $500M of long liquidations pushed traders out of crypto. Ethereum (ETH) fell harder, down 5.4% to about $2,564. Traders who borrowed money to bet on higher prices were forced to sell, wiping out about $547M of positions, 88% of them bets on rising prices. Money is also leaving U.S. crypto funds (ETFs): Ether funds lost money six days in a row, including $202M on Oct. 6. Government bond yields jumped, and Fed minutes showed most officials see another rate hike this year as possibly appropriate.
Why it matters
Bitcoin now sits about 34% below its record high of $126,198, which shows how fast crypto prices can swing when traders use borrowed money. When prices fall quickly, those traders are forced to sell, which can push prices down further. Higher interest rates also make safer options like government bonds look better next to crypto, which pays no interest.
