What happened
Brent crude oil (BZ=F) rose 0.3% to $100.58 on Tuesday after Saudi-backed forces said they retook Dhubab near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Houthis claimed strikes on Saudi oil sites. Yemen's government forces say they took Dhubab and nearby areas back from the Houthis, helped by about 100 Saudi coalition jets. The Houthis deny losing ground. They say they hit Riyadh's airport, the Khurais oil field and the Rabigh refinery, while Saudi officials confirmed only three minor injuries at airports.
Why it matters
Oil prices touch everyday budgets, and Brent crude, the world's main oil price, is sitting near $100 a barrel while fighting threatens a key shipping route. The Bab el-Mandeb Strait carries about 12% of the world's sea trade, and Khurais is a pumping station on Saudi Arabia's pipeline to the Red Sea. Rising Gulf exports and a G7 plan to release 100 million barrels of emergency oil have so far kept prices from jumping.
