What happened
Brent crude (BZ=F) rose 0.75% to $101.33 a barrel on Wednesday as Tropical Storm Isaias, forecast to become a hurricane, threatened Gulf of Mexico oil platforms. Chevron is pulling non-essential workers from its Gulf platforms while production runs normally, Shell is moving staff off six platforms, and BP is also evacuating. Forecasters expect Isaias to reach hurricane strength with 110 mph winds before hitting the coast between Louisiana and Florida on Friday. Platforms in the Gulf supply about 15% of U.S. crude oil.
Why it matters
Brent crude, the global price benchmark, is already near $100 a barrel because of attacks around the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil shipping route. A hurricane that shuts Gulf platforms or nearby refineries, which handle about half of U.S. refining capacity, could squeeze supply further. U.S. gasoline already averages $4.36 a gallon, up from $3.12 a year ago.
