What happened

Lennar (LEN) stock fell 6.7% to $74.44 on Monday as a short-seller report weighed on the homebuilder, the day Berkshire Hathaway disclosed buying 2.4 million more shares. Berkshire bought 2,418,637 shares on October 1 and 2 for about $193 million, filings show. That lifts its stake to about 11% of the homebuilder, with 28.4 million Class A shares. The report, from Hunterbrook, a firm betting against Lennar's stock (a short seller), says spinoff Millrose bought over 700 Lennar homes worth about $200 million. Lennar rebounded about 4% on Tuesday to $77.41 (per).

Why it matters

Berkshire Hathaway, now led by Greg Abel, is putting more money into Lennar even though housing is weak and Lennar's shares are down this year. Abel has said he does not see a quick recovery in housing, but calls it a long-term investment. Because Berkshire owns more than 10%, it has to report each purchase within days, so investors can watch its moves closely.
