What happened
Corteva (CTVA) stock rose 12% to $13.91 on Tuesday after JPMorgan upgraded it to Overweight with a $19 target, calling the shares undervalued following the Vylor seed spinoff. Overweight means JPMorgan expects the shares to beat the market; it raised its view from Neutral. On 1 October Corteva split off its seed business into a new company, Vylor, leaving a smaller crop-chemicals business. It also moved from the S&P 500 to the S&P MidCap 400 on 6 October, which pushed index funds to buy.
Why it matters
Corteva is now a smaller company that sells crop-protection products, such as weed and insect killers, and investors are still working out what it is worth. JPMorgan sees fair value near $21 a share before legal costs, against $13.91 now. The big risk is lawsuits over PFAS, so-called forever chemicals, which JPMorgan estimates could cost Corteva about $1.3 billion. Fifteen states have also sued over the split.
