What happened
Constellation Energy (CEG) stock rose 12% to $300.40 on Tuesday after Google signed a 20-year deal to fund 890 MW of nuclear upgrades, giving the power producer a long-term customer. Google will pay for upgrades at 11 existing Constellation reactors in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, adding about one large reactor's worth of power from 2028. Constellation plans to invest more than $4.3 billion, and Google signed a separate 15-year deal for another 2,700 MW. Oklo rose 8% and Vistra about 11%, though neither is part of the deal.
Why it matters
Constellation Energy shows how the huge electricity needs of AI data centers are turning into long-term contracts for power plants. Google is paying for more output from reactors that already exist, which is faster than building new ones. The regional grid (PJM), which serves about 67 million people, is short roughly 6.8 gigawatts of power, so tech companies are competing for supply.
