What happened
Ciena (CIEN) stock jumped 14% to about $445 on Tuesday after Marvell's investor day outlook and Nokia's CEO comments eased fears of AI data center overbuilding. Marvell said the market for the chips and links that move data inside AI data centers (interconnects) could reach about $65 billion by 2030. Nokia's CEO said Monday that customers would build data centers twice as fast if memory chips and power were not scarce. Nebius rose about 7% to 9%, Astera Labs about 7% and CoreWeave about 4% to 5%.
Why it matters
Ciena makes the equipment that sends data over fiber-optic cables between AI data centers, so its sales depend on how fast tech giants keep building them. Some investors worry too many data centers are being built, and Tuesday's comments from Marvell and Nokia pointed the other way. In September, Ciena raised its 2026 sales forecast to $6.42 billion, and the rally shows how closely its shares follow the AI spending outlook.
