What happened
Brent crude (BZ=F) rose 0.38% to $102.60 a barrel on Tuesday after tanker attacks near the Strait of Hormuz and Iran's refusal of talks with the US added to supply fears. A tanker carrying cooking gas (LPG) was hit by an unknown projectile on Sunday, and two more were reportedly hit on Monday (per). Iran's Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) also ordered another tanker to turn back, and it complied. President Masoud Pezeshkian called talks with Washington "meaningless". Prices stayed high but steady because more Gulf crude is flowing through the strait.
Why it matters
Brent crude is the world's main oil price, and it is staying above $100 because ships using the Strait of Hormuz, a key Gulf sea route, still face attack. Hiring a tanker now costs about $1.3 million a day, roughly 43 times January's rate, which can push up fuel and shipping costs. With Iran rejecting talks, no deal is in sight to calm the route.
