What happened
Brent crude oil (BZ=F) fell 1.9% to $100.32 on Monday as Saudi Arabia cut Asian prices and the G7 agreed to release 100 million barrels, even as Houthi fighting in Yemen escalated. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other top Trump officials met in secret at Camp David on Friday to discuss Iran and Yemen, where Saudi-backed forces are moving to push the Houthis back from the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a key Red Sea shipping lane. The G7 plan covers 100 million barrels of oil and diesel over four months, and the US has offered 40 million barrels from its own emergency reserve.
Why it matters
Brent crude, the world's main oil price benchmark, feeds straight into what people pay for gasoline, diesel and shipping. Iran reportedly says it will keep the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow Gulf shipping lane, shut until the US meets seven conditions, and Houthi control of Red Sea coast near Bab el-Mandeb puts a second route at risk. Emergency reserves may ease pump prices by about 25 cents a gallon, one expert estimates, though another expects little change.
