What happened
Russia struck Kyiv's Dnipro River bridges for a fourth straight day on Sunday and told foreign diplomats to leave, vowing more large-scale strikes in what it calls retaliation. The Sunday strike damaged the road on the Northern Bridge and injured two people. By Saturday, three of Kyiv's six road bridges over the river were fully or partly closed. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited Kyiv that day and pledged nearly $1.5 billion in new aid.
Why it matters
Kyiv's Dnipro bridges connect the city's east and west banks, so repeated strikes slow commutes and supply routes for residents. Ukraine's president says the aim is to push people to leave the capital. Russia says the strikes answer Ukrainian attacks on its oil refineries, and Ukraine says it will hit more of them, which matters for fuel supply.
