What happened
Vistra (VST) stock rose about 4.5% to roughly $146 on Monday after reports of a $4B federal loan to upgrade three nuclear plants, which could let them produce more power. Bloomberg reported on Friday that the Energy Department plans the loan, and Energy Secretary Chris Wright is expected to announce it at Vistra's Perry plant in Ohio. The money would fund upgrades at Perry and Davis-Besse in Ohio and Beaver Valley in Pennsylvania, which squeeze more electricity out of existing reactors. Rivals also rose, so part of Monday's move looks sector-wide: Constellation Energy gained about 4.6%.
Why it matters
Vistra owns nuclear plants that sell power into a grid straining under demand from AI data centers. A low-cost government loan could help it add power from plants it already runs, which is usually faster and cheaper than building new ones. The loan has been reported but not yet formally confirmed, so final terms could still change.
