What happened
Oil (Brent, BZ=F) held near $102 a barrel, up 0.07% on Monday, as the US sent a third carrier and 10,000 more troops toward Iran and Trump called heavier strikes possible after Nov. 3. The USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier and about 10,000 sailors and Marines are heading to the region, and the ships are expected to arrive by the end of November. Prices are held back by more Gulf oil shipments and a planned 100 million barrel release from emergency stocks by the G7, a group of rich countries. The US benchmark, WTI, slipped 0.5% to $90.65.
Why it matters
Oil is already near $100 a barrel, and high fuel costs are hurting US households ahead of the Nov. 3 elections. The extra warships and troops give the US more options if Trump orders heavier strikes on Iran, which borders the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route for Gulf crude. Higher oil prices tend to raise fuel and transport costs, which can push up prices worldwide.
