What happened
Nu Holdings (NU) stock rose nearly 6% in premarket trading on Thursday from a $12.66 close after the digital bank said it is not pursuing a deal for UK rival Monzo. Shares had dropped about 10% on Monday after news reports said Nu was in early talks to buy Monzo for £8 billion to £10 billion, roughly $10.6 billion to $13.3 billion. Investors worried the price was high and could hurt existing shareholders. Nu's statement, issued after Wednesday's market close, said it respects Monzo but is not pursuing a deal. It said its focus stays on Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and the U.S..
Why it matters
Nu Holdings shows how quickly a stock can swing when investors fear a big, expensive purchase. The Brazilian digital bank lost about $6 billion in market value in one day on the takeover reports, then won part of it back once it ruled the deal out. Nu now points investors back to its existing plans in Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and the U.S.. Monzo, a private UK bank, stays a separate company for now.
