What happened
Brent crude (BZ=F) jumped 4.4% to $102.31 on Thursday after reports the US is sending a third aircraft carrier and up to 10,000 more troops to the Middle East, raising supply fears. Brent is the global benchmark price for a barrel of oil. The American benchmark, WTI, rose 2.7% to $92.87. The extra forces are due in the region by the end of November. Traders worry a wider US-Iran conflict could further disrupt oil shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway that carries much of the world's oil.
Why it matters
Brent crude sets the tone for fuel costs around the world, so a jump back above $100 can feed into petrol, diesel and shipping bills. Supplies are already tight: Iran loaded no crude onto tankers in September, and global oil stockpiles have fallen by more than 500 million barrels since February. That leaves less cushion if fighting spreads. US diesel has already risen more than 70% since the war began, to $6.39 a gallon.
