What happened
Boeing (BA) stock rose 3.4% to $192.28 on Thursday, two days after the Navy picked it over Northrop Grumman for a $20 billion-plus F/A-XX fighter contract, giving it both US next-generation fighters. The Pentagon announced the award on Tuesday, Sept. 29. It covers the design and testing phase, including several test aircraft, not mass production yet. The jet is meant to replace the Navy's F/A-18 Super Hornets. Over the same stretch, Northrop Grumman shares fell about 4.5% to $482.00.
Why it matters
Boeing now leads both of the US military's planned next-generation fighters, after winning the Air Force's F-47 in March 2025, leaving Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman without a role in either. That points to years of future defense work for Boeing, which is also dealing with a software problem on its 737 MAX airliners. This award covers development only, so large production revenue is still some way off.
